Whenever I heard "21st Century Learning" I would automatically think about technology, even though it is SO much more than that. I had the opportunity to conduct research surrounding this broad concept "21st Century Learning" and my findings were definitely informative, motivating, thought-provoking, but also infuriating. Take a look at my video below where I examine 3 components of 21st Century Learning.
There are so many positives to 21st Century learning: becoming prepared for our ever changing world, cultivating curiosity and love for learning, and not just taking things for face value. These are all skills I hope my students have by the time they are entering the real world.
While doing my research, I began making lists in my head. What do I already do? What do I do sometimes? What do I never do? Wanting to advance in my profession, this is a good practice! This is also a 21st century teacher practice as outlined in "15 Characteristics of a 21st Century Teacher", which makes me feel like I am on the right track. However, as a new teacher, in a pandemic, teaching in person, with new curriculum, with unannounced observations, having to switch to a subject I have never taught before, I wanted to pull my hair out... There are so many articles out there about the best practices for 21st century education, but if I were to incorporate all of them into my practice, I would be challenging routines set by my administration and curriculum. How am I supposed to implement all of these practices when I don't have the support or the resources to do so? I want to incorporate these practices, but I just don't know how with what I'm given right now. I hope to get out of this "survival mode" soon, but for right now, all I can do is my best!
